PRACTICE
AREAS
ADMINISTRATIVE LAW & GOVERNMENT RELATIONS
One may expect a Washington, D.C., law firm to have the background to handle matters involving the federal government, and that is a primary focus of our practice. The LTA attorneys have a broad range of experience in this field, which is broadly described as administrative law. The firm's attorneys regularly represent clients in proceedings before federal government agencies and occasionally before state or local agencies. Representation includes participation in administrative rulemaking proceedings, agency inspections and investigations, and litigated cases. The firm also counsels its clients -- both companies and trade associations -- on compliance with the state and federal laws which govern their particular industry. In addition we regularly advise several of our clients on the requirements of the state and federal laws governing lobbying and election campaigns.
ASSOCIATION LAW
We serve as the primary counsel for seven non-profit organizations in the Washington, D.C., area, and we have worked on projects for several other associations and charities in recent years. These clients cover the range from charitable foundations to international business leagues. Many of the issues and needs are the same as any business corporation -- government and business contracts, employee issues, and corporate law questions. However, associations differ from businesses in their basic purpose, the methods of governance, and their tax treatment. Our attorneys have extensive experience with these unique needs of non-profit organizations, and we are able to advise association staff and members alike on the opportunities and limitations that this special status presents.
FOOD & DRUG
We counsel trade associations and companies on a variety of issues in the ever-dynamic area of food and drug law and represent individual companies subject to investigation or enforcement actions. Our expertise is focused in the areas of food products and animal drugs. Much of this work takes place in the administrative proceedings conducted by the Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
BUSINESS & EMPLOYMENT LAW
We provide representation in all matters related to the organization, development, and governance of new and existing businesses. In addition to establishing corporations, limited liability companies, and partnerships, our firm has expertise in drafting and negotiating buy-sell agreements, recapitalizations, joint ventures, asset acquisitions, venture capital initiatives, and business contracts of all types and descriptions. We are committed to tailoring our services to established businesses and remaining flexible enough to facilitate new ventures by entrepreneurs and small businesses. Our firm also has considerable expertise in the growing field of employment law. We represent employers in wrongful termination litigation and employment discrimination litigation. We offer extensive consultations with our clients to reduce the chances that an employment problem ends up in court. Among our services are review and drafting of employment contracts, personnel manuals, and employee evaluation programs.
IMMIGRATION
Our firm assists individuals and businesses with immigration-related issues before the Immigration and Naturalization Service, and the departments of State and Labor. We regularly provide assistance to employers in obtaining permanent U.S. residency for professionals and skilled workers; obtaining nonimmigrant work visas for professional employees (e.g., H-1B); transferring foreign employees to the U.S. from overseas offices and affiliates; and maintaining I-9 compliance.
LITIGATION
Regardless of the subject area, some disputes cannot be resolved by the parties and must be pursued in court. Our firm's litigators appear in the courts in Washington, D.C., California, and Virginia for the firm's clients. We can represent our clients that are national organizations through our connections with lawyers licensed in most other states. Our firm's litigators handle client matters in both state and federal trial and appellate courts and before both state and federal administrative agencies. In recent years, arbitration and other alternate dispute resolution have grown in popularity, and these proceedings have become an important aspect of our litigation practice.
OUR VISION
Our vision is to serve you better. We are client-focused and results-driven. We take the time to get to know you, your needs, your goals, and your budget. Whether you are a corporation, a trade association, a non-profit, a small business or an individual, we will work with you to achieve your goals and protect your rights.
We will fight for you in court. But we also believe that sometimes the best result is one that avoids litigation. Before jumping into protracted litigation, we attempt to negotiate the best possible outcome to save you time and money. We also advise clients of their legal duties and obligations, so that they won’t be dragged into court.
The testimony to our success is that we are results driven. Long-time clients continue to employ our legal services and acumen for many years. Our goal is to develop a long-term relationship where we can grow together. We offer our services based upon the traditional billable hour; but we also can work with your organization on a monthly retainer basis or on a fixed fee project basis.
